Dress Code

Dress Code
2024-2025 School Year

Overview

This school year, our parents and staff voted to move away from the previously required school uniforms at our school. Parents may still choose to send their children to school in uniform but it will no longer be required and enforced. However, our school will continue to require that students adhere to a dress code to limit distractions and promote a positive school climate for all.

We ask that students attending Suy:u  wear clothing that is comfortable, clean, and appropriate for an elementary school. Because our instructional program includes active play, students must wear clothing that allows them to run and jump, including closed-toed shoes. Clothing and other items our students wear must not disrupt the educational process, create safety concerns, nor create any distraction. Sleeveless tops such as tank tops or spaghetti straps are prohibited.

Inappropriate dress includes but is not limited to:

  • Clothing that does not fit reasonably.
  • Clothing with logos, slogans, words, or pictures promoting or depicting alcohol, tobacco, drugs, vandalism, bigotry, violence, sexual connotations, or profanity. This includes clothing with phrases or pictures that have double meanings.
  • Clothing that is revealing or immodest or tops that expose bare midriff or undergarments. Examples include halter tops, bathing suits, sports bras, tube tops, razor back tops, spaghetti straps, and low cut tops. Sleeveless tops such as tank tops or spaghetti straps are prohibited.
  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be long enough that they reach the same point on the thigh as the tip of a student’s longest finger when the arm is extended and resting on the thigh.
  • Earrings, chains, jewelry that dangles and could be dangerous when playing.
  • Any make-up or adornment that causes a distraction in the classroom or on the playground.
  • Shoes with open toes or excessive heels.
  • Hats or hoods worn indoors or incorrectly.

School personnel reserve the right to determine the appropriateness of hair, clothing, and make-up. With the support and cooperation of our students, parents, and staff, Suy:u will continue to be a positive and productive learning environment free of distractions that impede the learning process. Remember, our focus is on learning.

Outerwear:  All outerwear should be clearly labeled with the student’s name. Students may not wear hoods or hats inside the classroom as it impedes engagement and participation in classroom activities.

Shoes:  All shoes are acceptable except backless, open toe shoes, flip flops, or others deemed inappropriate or unsafe for the school environment.  Students must have shoes that are safe and comfortable for physical activities each day.

Hats:  Hats may be worn outdoors, but must be taken off inside school buildings.  Hats are to be worn in the frontward position only and must be free of offensive language or pictures.  Any gang related attire or symbols are not permitted.

Belts:  Chains and/or hardware hanging from any part of a student’s clothing are not acceptable and can be a safety hazard while playing.  Belts should not extend more than 6 inches from the buckle.
